- India lead the three-match series 1-0
- England have lost their last two ODI matches
- Jos Buttler top scored for England in the first ODI with 52 from 67
- England's Phil Salt and Ben Duckett were the top opening partnership with 75 runs scored
Head To Head
India have won six of their last 10 against England including their last three matches. England have won four meetings in this time.
India Form
India's bowling unit was in sublime form in the first ODI as they managed to take England from 75/0 to 248 all out. While England's batsmen were well on top for the first eight overs, the home side fought back admirably.
Harshit Rana (3/53) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) starred with the ball as they continually gave England issues, taking wickets and keeping a tight grip on the flow of runs. Jadeja was particularly impressive, taking three wickets and leaking just 2.89 runs per over. Pressure ultimately told when Jadeja was bowling, with a lack of runs and his accurate bowling ultimately seeing England trying too hard to force the game in their favour.
While India's batsmen did make hard-work of getting to their target of 249, they were able to secure victory with four wickets and 68 balls to spare. The form of Rohit Sharma will be a worry, especially when considering he looked out of touch in his innings of two runs from seven balls. While there are still some kinks to work out ahead of the Champions Trophy, India look in good touch, and I am backing them to secure the series and go 2-0 up.
England Form
England had patches in which they looked good in the opening ODI, but they were unable to take advantage of these moments against a very good Indian side.
Phil Salt (43 from 26) and Ben Duckett (32 from 29) got England off to a blistering start, but Salt's wicket saw England go from 75 without loss to 248 all out. Jos Buttler (52) and Jacob Bethell (51) gave England hope that they could reach a competitive total, but too many batsmen failed to contribute. Indeed, Liam Livingstone was once again guilty of giving his wicket away when he might have tried to rebuild with Bethell at the crease and around 15 overs still to come.
England's bowlers did have India teetering as the hosts went from 221/3 to 235/6, but England's fightback came far too late. Jos Buttler's return to the side gave England a real boost, while Salt and Duckett looked like a more solid opening partnership than their counterparts. I am backing the three England batsmen to star in a losing effort, with Buttler top scoring for England and the visitors providing the highest opening partnership.
Verdict
I was not convinced by India's opening partnership in game one, with Sharma particularly poor. With this in mind, I am backing Salt and Duckett to provide the top opening partnership, while I predict that Buttler will once again score the runs for England.
Despite England's need for a win, I am backing India to come away with the bragging rights and the series itself as they go 2-0 up.
