On Saturday, G2 Esports confirmed the signing of Nikita "HeavyGod" Martynenko, who joins the European Counter-Strike team from Cloud9.
HeavyGod's arrival confirms the reports of G2 Esports having struck a deal with Cloud9 for the Israeli rifler who joins G2 as a replacement for Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, who left for Team Falcons earlier this month.
With HeavyGod's arrival, G2 Esports are back in full force; however, they are expected to change up the player's roles, with Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa taking over NiKo's previous position on the CT side, while HeavyGod steps in for malbsMd.
HeavyGod joins G2 Esports from Cloud9, who he joined in July 2024, as a part of Cloud9's roster rebuild. At Cloud9, HeavyGod has not found much success, as the team struggled to perform in bigger events, including Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024, where they crashed out in the 20th-22nd-place.
Despite the team's lack of success, HeavyGod stood out, averaging a 1.16 performance rating and 1.32 during Cloud9's run through the Perfect World Shanghai Major European RMR A.
Before joining Cloud9, the 22-year-old spent six months with the struggling OG, who, like Cloud9, failed to win much. While HeavyGod did not add trophies to his resume while competing under OG's banner, he stood out with a 1.14 performance rating.
His next step takes him to the top of the Counter-Strike food chain, as HeavyGod joins title-hungry G2 Esports.
The European squad are fresh off a solid season, having won four S-Tier tournaments, including BLAST Premier: World Final 2024, before finishing the year with a semifinal exit from the Shanghai Major.
With HeavyGod replacing the long-time star NiKo, G2 Esports will start the 2025 season fresh with a new-look lineup, debuting on Friday, January 17, against B8 in the first round of BLAST Bounty Season 1.
