OpTic Texas and Miami Heretics will cross swords on Thursday, January 30, in the upper bracket quarterfinals of Call of Duty League (CDL) 2025 Stage 1 Major Qualifiers in what should be a very one-sided match.

Miami Heretics got seeded into the upper bracket of the Major with a 2-5 record, which perfectly illustrates where they belong relative to OpTic Texas, who are 6-1 and the no.1 seed from the closed qualifiers.

This looks more like a free win for OpTic than anything else. Miami Heretics have not looked even remotely good in the qualifiers and should have no business causing any upsets at the Major.

OpTic Texas are in great form ahead of CDL 2025 Stage 1 Major. They went 6-1 in the closed qualifiers and boast a +60% win rate on all three game modes.

They've so far beaten Cloud9 New York, Vancouver Surge, LA Guerrillas M8, Vegas Falcons, LA Thieves, and Toronto Ultra. Interestingly, just one of those six wins was a 3-0 sweep (against C9NY), granted OpTic are known for dropping maps.

This is not a weakness, though. OpTic Texas are an elite team and one of the main favourites to win the Major. There are some minor concerns, namely their poor first blood rate on Search & Destroy, which indicates it needs some work.

But this should be an issue only against other top contenders and less so against the likes of Miami Heretics.

Miami Heretics might be the first CoD esports team ever to go 2-5 in the qualifiers and still secure a spot in the upper bracket. As crazy as this outcome is, it just highlights how big of a gap there is between bottom teams and the top contenders for Major 1.

Last week, they played two games, both ending in game five defeats against LA Thieves and Carolina Royal Ravens. Those results show that Miami Heretics are solid on respawns, and they have been for a while.

But they struggle on Search & Destroy, which explains why Miami Heretics have already lost five game-fives this season. The only exception was a 3-2 victory against the shaky Cloud9 New York in the third week of the qualifiers.

OpTic Texas v Miami Heretics

Miami Heretics are the league's worst Search & Destroy team but quite decent on respawns, with a 50% win rate on Control and Hardpoint. But while their respawns help Miami Heretics be competitive, they are very inefficient in closing out games, having won just one of six games which went to game five.

OpTic Texas are quite good on Search & Destroy, which alone should secure them a win on Thursday. However, knowing that Miami Heretics can be deadly on respawns and the fact that OpTic are known for dropping at least one map, I can see Miami Heretics getting their names on the board at least once.

It is also worth noting that Miami Heretic will be playing in front of their home crowd in Spain, which is something to consider.
