PaiN Gaming and Cloud9 will face off on Sunday, December 1, in the third round of Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 for the first time since August, when paiN Gaming won in two maps. The rematch is, however, expected to be much closer, as both teams have shown some good, but just as many bad things of late.

Quality-wise, you can't set Cloud9 apart from paiN, and their most recent results don't help the cause either. This explains why the two Counter-Strike teams are priced at the same odds for this match, although with a deeper map pool, the Brazilian side are arguably in a better spot to come out ahead.

PaiN Gaming kicked off their Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 campaign with a convincing 13-5 victory against the struggling Imperial Esports. However, they were no match for GamerLegion, who bested them 13-10 on Nuke, which is not a good look.

Most of those results do not prove much, as it is easy for the better team to slip in BO1. A better indication would be paiN's success leading to the Major, which includes strong showings at ESL Challenger Katowice, ESL Challenger League Season 48, and the Americas RMR.

With a 7-3 record from their last ten, paiN are in good form.

Cloud9 lost their first match of the Shanghai Major against Team Liquid but got back on their feet with a 13-5 victory against Fnatic. Not the most promising pair of results, but they show what we already know about Cloud9 – they're very good at beating weaker teams, but struggle to perform when challenged.

So the question for this match really is where do we place paiN Gaming?

While paiN are far from one of the elite teams, they have the tools to deal with Cloud9, especially considering how poorly Timofey "interz" Yakushin has been playing this event, averaging a 0.66 rating across the two maps.

PaiN Gaming v Cloud9

On paper, paiN and Cloud9 look about equal, and while I would argue Cloud9's ceiling is higher, we could've been saying that for the entire season, yet C9 have not given us many reasons to believe in them.

Moreover, C9's interz is in questionable form, and it is not like his teammate, Boombl4, is playing much better (0.89). With two players averaging below 0.90 rating, Cloud9 should not be viewed as a serious threat.
