Paper Rex and DetonatioN FocusMe will face off on Saturday, February 1, in the second round of the lower bracket at VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) 2025: Pacific Kickoff, in what should be a one-sided fixture.

DetonatioN FocusMe showed some fight this season, and they performed well against Global Esports in the previous round, when their players showed better individual performances. However, even though DFM are looking better, they are no match for Paper Rex, who are one of the region's strongest VALORANT teams.

Admittedly, Paper Rex disappointed with their loss against T1 in the lower bracket, but T1 are incredibly strong, and that match could've easily ended the other way around. There is little to suggest Paper Rex will not win on Saturday.

Paper Rex entered VCT 2025: Pacific Kickoff as one of the top contenders to win the trophy, and they are still on that path despite losing to T1 (1-2) in the upper bracket. It was a close game which could have easily ended the other way around and the final result is more of an indication of T1's strength rather than Paper Rex's weaknesses.

Having made no roster changes from last season, Paper Rex should do just as well, if not better, than in 2024, when they were one of the top-performing teams in the Pacific. That is believable as PR looked great during the offseason with no tournament titles from VALORANT Radiant Asia Invitational and Spotlight Series Pacific 2024.

DetonatioN FocusMe Form

DetonatioN FocusMe are far from one of the bottom VALORANT teams in VCT Pacific; however, they definitely do not belong among the top few.

The Japanese squad started the season with a very tough defeat against Rex Regum Qeon, who reverse-swept them with 13-3 on Pearl and 13-3 on Haven; however, DFM managed to pick themselves up in the lower bracket with a 2-0 sweep of Global Esports.

It was a competitive game on Split, which DFM closed out with 14-12 thanks to a heroic performance from Ibuki "Meiy" Seki and Yu "akame" Gwang-hui, who averaged 1.46 and 1.51 performance ratings, respectively.

Individually, DetonatioN FocusMe have shown improvement; however, to take down Paper Rex, it will take a lot more than just slight improvement.

Verdict

Paper Rex v DetonatioN FocusMe

Paper Rex have played just one game this season, so it is hard to say just how good they are, especially since they lost to T1. However, this is a very stacked roster with excellent players, making it very hard to doubt their chances to produce a deep run.

The question here is not whether Paper Rex can win, but rather can DetonatioN FocusMe stop them. Despite the improvement they've shown, however, I do not see Detonation FocusMe winning more than one map and even that seems unlikely.
