Burnley vs Oxford United
Burnley continue their pursuit of the frontrunners in the English Championship table as they host Oxford United in a midweek fixture.
The visitors are making a push for a place in the top half and have shown flashes of quality lately. Both teams have struggled in attack in their last few games and goals could come at a premium in Tuesday’s clash.
Burnley Form
Sitting five points off leaders Leeds United, Burnley remain in the hunt for automatic promotion and also the Championship title. They have one of the longest unbeaten runs in the league and have not lost in their last 17 matches.
Things appear to be going well for Burnley at the moment, their title push has been hampered by too many draws, playing out a 0-0 scoreline at Portsmouth on Saturday. Scott Parker's men have been held three times in their last four Championship matches while five of their last six fixtures at home have produced halftime draws.
One of the issues for Burnley is a lack of cutting edge in attack having failed to score in four of their last five home matches. However, they balance things out by boasting the best defence in the league and have kept clean sheets in their last eight Championship matches. This combination has also seen 10 of their last 11 Championship home matches produce under 2.5 goals.
Oxford United Form
Oxford United are currently 16th in the table but will have eyes on a place in the top half, sitting just five points behind 10th placed Bristol City. They have also shown some good form lately and head to Turf Moor unbeaten in their last nine Championship matches.
Like their hosts, Oxford United have had their share of stalemates, playing out four draws in the last six Championship matches, including a 1-1 scoreline with Bristol City last Saturday. They have also produced halftime draws in three of their last five matches in the league.
Oxford United have also struggled to find their rhythm in attack, failing to score more than one goal in each of their last four championship away matches. All of this means seven of their last eight matches in the league have produced under 2.5 goals.
Head to Head
Both teams played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture back in September. However, the last meeting prior to that match was a League One clash in 2000 which ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts.
Verdict
Burnley and Oxford United may be challenging at different positions in the table but their recent form has been quite similar. Both teams have not shown too much attacking quality lately, so there could be few goals onTuesday.
The hosts are helped by having the best defence in the league and could be set for their ninth straight Championship clean sheet. With a close contest expected at Turf Moor, a halftime draw could also be on the cards.
