Marseille vs Lyon Tips & Preview - Little to separate stumbling rivals
- Marseille struggling recently, winless in last three matches.
- Lyon drawn their last five matches, struggle away from home.
- Expect goals as both teams have strong attacks, weak defenses.

Marseille vs Lyon
Marseille and Lyon square off in a French Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday with both teams looking out of sorts at the moment.
The hosts have lost ground on leaders PSG while the visitors are now looking uncertain in their push for the European places. There appears to be little to separate them at the moment and with both teams on a run of draws lately, they could be set to cancel each other out.
Marseille Form
It has been a difficult few weeks for Marseille, who are winless in their last three matches across all competitions and are now 10 points behind leaders PSG. They have played out two draws in that run and were beaten 2-0 by Nice in their previous Ligue 1 fixture.
One thing that has troubled Marseille app season is their erratic showings at home having picked up just three wins in their last eight Ligue 1 matches at Orange Velodrome. Two of the last three fixtures in that run have ended in draws, including a 1-1 scoreline with Strasbourg in their previous match in front of their fans.
One positive for Marseille is that Mason Greenwood continues to impress and has scored in six of the last 10 Ligue 1 matches. However, defending is often an issue for teams managed by Roberto De Zerbi and the hosts have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions.
Lyon Form
The draws have been more rampant with Lyon as they head into Sunday’s clash having been held in their last five matches across all competitions. They have played out a 1-1 scoreline in their last two matches, first at Nantes in their previous Ligue 1 fixture and then with Ludogorets, which helped them earn a direct berth in the Europa League round of 16.
Lyon have appointed Paulo Fonseca as their new manager and will be targeting a positive start at Marseille, although they are winless in their last four away matches across all competitions. Three of these fixtures have ended in draws while they also crashed out of the Coupe de France on penalties after being held to a 2-2 scoreline by lower league side Bourgoin Jallieu.
Like the hosts, Lyon have no issues in attack and have scored in nine of their last 10 Ligue 1 matches. Their shaky defence continues to let them down and they have failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six Ligue 1 away matches.
Head to Head
Marseille and Lyon have claimed four wins each and two draws in the last 10 matches. However, the hosts earned a 3-2 away victory in the reverse fixture back in September.
Verdict
Marseille and Lyon need a swift turnaround in fortunes but seem unable to end their recent run of draws. They appear evenly matched at the moment and could be set for another stalemate.
The reverse fixture was high on attacking quality as they produced a five goal thriller. Sunday’s clash is likely to serve up goals, with both teams expected to score.
