West Ham vs Newcastle United
West Ham are aiming to maintain their recent resurgence when they host Newcastle United in the English Premier League on Monday night.
The hosts have looked sharp lately and face a Magpies team dealing with injuries and absentees. The Hammers also boast a decent record in this fixture and can do enough to avoid defeat against the visitors.
West Ham Form
It took some time but West Ham are finally finding their form under manager Graham Potter. They have won their last two Premier League matches, claiming a 1-0 victory at Arsenal before beating troubled Leicester City 2-0 in their previous fixture.
West Ham were never in any real relegation danger and those results mean they are now 16 points clear of the bottom. The manager will also be pleased with the team’s defensive work in those two wins having failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last eight home matches.
The return of Jarrod Bowen has been a boost to West Ham and he has scored three times in the last six Premier League matches. The forward raises the quality of the entire Hammers’ attack and five of the last eight home matches in the league have produced over 2.5 goals.
Newcastle United Form
Newcastle United are in the middle of a rough patch at the moment having lost three of their last four Premier League matches. Eddie Howe’s team were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool last time out in the league before falling 2-1 to Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round.
It is not just about poor results for Newcastle United, who are also dealing with a depleted squad, with Sven Botman and Lewis Hall sidelined while Anthony Gordon is suspended. The Magpies have also lost their last two matches but remain just three points off the top four.
The good news for Newcastle United is that top scorer Alexander Isak trained normally this week after limping off last time out and will be keen to add to his 19 league goals. They will also need to tighten up at the back having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six Premier League matches, with five of those fixtures producing over 2.5 goals.
Head to Head
West Ham and Newcastle United have two wins each and three draws from their last seven meetings. The Hammers picked up a 2-0 away victory in the reverse fixture back in November.
Verdict
Beyond the injuries and suspension, looming large for Newcastle United is the Carabao Cup final next Sunday. That could serve as a distraction to the Magpies and with West Ham growing in confidence lately, a home win or draw is likely here.
Both teams have quality in attack and having scored in seven of their last eight meetings, a repeat is expected. Three of the last four meetings have also produced over 2.5 goals, which is likely to be the outcome in this one.
