Honduras and El Salvador square off in their second Group B fixture at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with both teams still seeking their first win in the competition.

The Hondurans will be desperate to move on from the humiliating defeat in their first outing. They have a good record in this fixture and should claim the upper hand over the Salvadorans, who have been unconvincing lately. 

Honduras Form


Honduras endured a disappointing start to their Gold Cup campaign as they suffered a 6-0 defeat to Canada. They fell behind as early as the 27th minute and struggled to find their rhythm throughout the contest.
 
Manager Reinaldo Rueda will consider that result a blip and head into this clash keen to get their campaign back on track. Honduras had been in good form in the build-up to the competition, winning their previous four matches. 

Honduras tend to make fast starts and have scored first in three of their last four matches across all competitions. They are even more dangerous after settling down and have won the second half in four of their last five matches, scoring all 10 of their goals in that run after the break.

El Salvador Form


El Salvador fared slightly better in their own opening fixture, holding out for a 0-0 draw with Curacao. They were second best throughout the contest and rode their luck a few times, with the Curacaoans wasteful in attack. 

While the Salvadorans will consider it a decent start to the Gold Cup, the result maintains a recent unconvincing run. Henan Gomez’s team are winless in five of their last six matches, a stretch that includes friendlies and World Cup qualifiers.

Another issue for El Salvador is that they have a habit of fading away the longer a game goes on. They have failed to score in the second half in four of their last seven matches across all competitions.

Honduras have 14 wins and seven draws while El Salvador have earned just four victories from 25 previous matches. The last meeting between both teams was a friendly in 2024 which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Verdict

Honduras often get the better of El Salvador and having also won four of the last five matches, should come out on top here. The Hondurans will be keen to settle any early nerves and should grab the opening goal as they have done in three of their last four matches.
 
Given their knack for getting more active after the break, Honduras are also expected to win the second half having served up a similar pattern in four of their last five matches.
