Barcelona vs Aston Villa Preview & Tips
Barcelona were bested by PSG in a thrilling Champions League match as their last European outing ended in a 4-2 loss.
Aston Villa are looking to extend a very impressive three-game winning run in the Champions League as they travel to take on one of the best club teams in the world.
- Barcelona have seen both sides score in all three of their European matches
Head To Head
The pair have met four times before, with Barca winning twice, Villa securing one win and one game ending as a draw.
Barcelona Form
Barcelona were denied the chance to make it three consecutive wins in the Champions League by PSG in an enthralling match that saw the Spanish side lose 4-2.
While Barca played some excellent football in that loss, they were outdone by an opponent that is still on another level to all others in the club game. Despite their loss, Barcelona will be confident that they can make it three wins in their last four in the competition against an opponent that are the big underdogs in their clash.
Across competitions, Barca have won 12 of their last 14 competitive matches, with their last outing ending in a dominant 6-1 win over Alaves in La Liga. While Barcelona have had issues with keeping clean sheets of late, they have made a habit out of outscoring their opponents this season. With both sides scoring in their last five outings, I am backing the home team to come out on top despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
Aston Villa Form
Aston Villa have been superb in the Champions League this season after winning their opening three matches and moving up to second in the standings.
Wins over Club Brugge (3-2), Fenerbahce (6-0) and Viking (3-1) have seen Villa impress, but they will know that this is their first top level test in the competition this season. Frustratingly for Villa, they arrive for this one on the back of two without a win after losing 3-0 to Bournemouth in the EFL Cup and drawing 1-1 with Fulham in the Premier League.
While Villa have made a habit out of avoiding defeat since their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in mid-September, they are really up against it in their clash with Barca. Their hosts have continually outscored the opposition and while they will likely give Villa chances to score, I do not see the travelling side outscoring their hosts.
Verdict
I am backing Villa to breach Barca's defence but to fall short as they lose to one of the top sides in Europe.
