Liverpool vs Villarreal Preview & Tips

Liverpool ran out 6-3 winners in a thrilling clash with LASK in their last European game as the English side seemed to click into gear when on the front-foot against their unfancied opponents.

Villarreal surged to an impressive 3-1 win over Napoli in their last European game as they bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund in their opener.

In their four previous meetings, Liverpool have won three times while Villarreal have won once.

Liverpool's 3-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester City in the Premier League earlier in the month saw a solid run of seven matches without defeat brought to an end in a big loss.

Instead of resting on their laurels and seeing one loss turn into two, the Reds surged to a 6-3 win over LASK in the Champions League in midweek. Leading 3-0 at half-time, the Reds were leaky at the back in the second-half as the second 45 finished 3-3, but they looked good when on the ball in a match they knew they needed to win.

At the weekend, they extended their winning run to two matches as they beat Brentford in a 2-1 triumph. Villarreal will arrive looking to make things very difficult for the Reds, and while I back the home side to fail to keep a clean sheet for the fourth successive game, I am not backing against them completely.

Alexander Isak has also started to impress for the Reds, and after scoring against Brentford at the weekend, I am backing the forward to find the back of the net in this one.

Villarreal Form

Villarreal have struggled for real momentum of late, with the side winning just three of their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Alongside their trio of wins, the Spanish side have lost five times and drawn three games. On the road, one win in their last six has failed to paper over the cracks that two draws and three defeats have highlighted. Fortunately for Villarreal, they arrive knowing that Liverpool's defence will almost certainly give them a chance to score in this one.

Villarreal were beaten by Liverpool in an entertaining 3-2 loss the last time the pair came together, and I back something similar in this one as the Spanish side breach Liverpool's defence but fail to land the killer blow.

I am backing Liverpool to win despite failing to keep Villarreal out as Isak continues to score goals for the English side.
