Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United Preview & Tips
Atletico Madrid are looking for a reaction on the back of a supremely frustrating 2-1 loss to Liverpool in their opening Champions League game.
Manchester United hammered Sabah Baku 4-0 in their last Champions League outing as they easily beat their opponent.
- Manchester United have not won any of their last four across competitions (L2, D2)
- Atleti have seen both sides score in their last two outings
Head To Head
The pair have met four times before, with United winning once, Atletico winning twice and one game ending as a draw.
Atletico Madrid Form
Atletico Madrid were put on the backfoot in the Champions League immediately as their 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield saw them slip down to 26th in the table. While there is still plenty of the campaign to come, the Spanish side need to bounce back at the first time of asking.
Despite this loss to the Reds, Atletico have managed to embark on a four-game winning run after wins over Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Real Madrid and Alaves in La Liga. Their four victories means Atleti arrive in good form.
Manchester United have been very poor of late meaning the formbook suggests the home side should take the points. Of course, Champions League matches are rarely that straightforward. Atleti have seen both sides score in their last two, and while I back the Spanish side to make it five consecutive wins, I do not back them to keep a clean sheet.
Manchester United Form
Since their 4-0 win over Sabah Baku, Manchester United have been very poor, losing to Manchester City and Brighton before dropping points against struggling Fulham and Tottenham.
Worrying for United will be that they are yet to play and beat anyone of note. Indeed, across competitions, United have beaten Ipswich and Sabah Baku, while they have lost to Hull City along with City and Brighton. Having lost their two major tests against in-form City and Brighton, I worry for United as their run worsens.
Atletico are in better form than United, and they are the favourites. The English side will want to keep things tight in defence as they hope to play out a smash and grab. However, without a win across their last four, I am backing against the travelling outfit.
Verdict
I am backing Atletico Madrid to beat United despite failing to keep a clean sheet as they get their first European win of the season.
