Viking were beaten 3-1 by Stuttgart in their opening match in the Champions League group phase after edging past Dinamo Zagreb in the playoffs.

Bayern Munich were able to easily beat Bodo/Glimt in their opening European match as they stormed to a big 5-0 win.

Viking have had to battle hard to get to this stage of the Champions League after being placed in the final round of playoff matches to reach the competition proper.

Their 2-2 draw with Dinamo Zagreb in the first-leg was quickly followed by a 3-1 win over their opponents at home. Their reward was a place in Europe’s elite competition where they were beaten 3-1 by Stuttgart in their opener.

Next up is another Bundesliga team in the form of the best side in Germany. While there are no certainties in football, this match will almost certainly be a clash in which the home side simply enjoy the occasion. The beauty of a mismatch in a cup game is something that will spur Viking on, but I see nothing other than consecutive defeats for the home side incoming.

Bayern Munich were not good enough against Augsburg at the weekend as their 2-2 Bundesliga draw saw their three-game winning run come to an end.

In Europe, Bayern are perfect having scored five goals against Bodo/Glimt without conceding. Their big win means the German side sit in second, denied top spot by PSG’s superior goal difference.

While the Champions League is rarely a competition teams will want to arrive in looking to return to winning ways, Bayern will know that there are few more winnable games than this one. The free-scoring travelling side will be eyeing up a big win, and I predict that their run of seeing over 3.5 goals in five of their last seven across competitions will continue in a return to winning ways.
