Liverpool vs Chelsea Preview & Tips
Liverpool were excellent against Brighton at the weekend as they extended their winning run in all competitions to four matches after their 2-0 win.
Chelsea were left stunned by Tottenham in their last match as the same inconsistencies that have hindered their campaign resurfaced once again in a 2-0 loss.
- The Reds have won their last four in all competitions
Head To Head
Across the last 10 meetings between the pair Liverpool have won four times, Chelsea have secured two wins and four games have ended as draws.
Liverpool Form
Liverpool knew they needed a big result on the back of a chastening 3-0 home loss to Manchester City in the league, with the side finding consistent wins tough to come by.
Since then, they have surged to wins over LASK (6-3), Brentford (2-1), Villarreal (4-3) and Brighton (2-0). Their win over Brighton was particularly impressive as it saw the Reds beat one of the Premier League's in-form sides whilst keeping a clean sheet, something they had failed to do in their previous four.
Against the Blues, Liverpool have the chance to defeat one of their biggest rivals and extend their own winning run to five matches. While I predict that it will not be a simple game, I am backing them to ease past Chelsea in an entertaining match as they make it three successive home wins.
Chelsea Form
Following their stunning 3-0 loss to Brentford in the league, Chelsea needed to react, and that is exactly what they did as they hammered Bournemouth 5-1 before downing Everton 2-0.
Heading into their clash with Tottenham, Chelsea would have been confident. However, they were outthought and outplayed by a side that fully deserved their 2-0 win. Ultimately, Chelsea failed to break their opponents down as defensive lapses cost them once again.
Now, with a trip to Anfield in midweek, I am backing the Blues to stutter once again. Their inability to breach a Tottenham side that has been poor this season is a major worry, while Liverpool arrive for this one in good form having won their last four.
On the road, Chelsea have lost two of their last three at Anfield, drawing the other. With the Blues going scoreless in their last game, I predict another defeat is on the cards in midweek.
Verdict
I am backing Liverpool to hand Chelsea a frustrating defeat as they are knocked out of the EFL Cup by a Liverpool side that looks to be finding some form.
