Real Madrid vs Villarreal Preview & Tips

Despite only losing twice in the league this season, Real Madrid already find themselves six points short of an inspired Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

Villarreal desperately needed the pair of wins they secured heading into the international break as they finally put an end to a five-game winless urn.

Real Madrid have won six of their last 10 meetings with Villarreal, with the latter winning twice and two games ending as draws.

Real Madrid began the new season in good form as they beat Espanyol, Real Sociedad and Malaga. However, their 1-0 loss to Real Betis saw them lose ground on Barcelona before a pair of wins over Rayo Vallecano and Elche.

Heading into the international break, Real were targeting a sixth win in seven, but they were beaten in a stunning 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid that has seen Real fall six short of the summit.

While there is still a huge amount of the season to come, Real cannot afford to let the gap between themselves and the reigning champions increase. Fortunately for Real, they have been too good for Villarreal of late, winning their last four meetings. Kylian Mbappe also boasts goals in each of his last three against his opponents, while he has scored seven times this season. I back the forward to lead his side to a crucial win on their return to La Liga duty.

Villarreal were hurtling towards the first international break without a win after drawing their opening two and then losing their next three.

This made their 3-1 win over Malaga even more important before they turned one win into two as they beat Levante 3-1. After seven matches, Villarreal have notched eight points, meaning they are only seven behind their next opponents despite their disappointing start.

While they could drag themselves to within four points of Real with a win, I do not back them to extend their winning run to three games. Four away games have resulted in one win, two draws and a defeat, and I predict that they will slump to another loss as their decent run is brought to a grinding halt.
