Everton vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Everton are looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the league that extended their run of defeats without scoring to two matches.
Newcastle brought an end to their own two-game losing run as they eased past Crystal Palace in a battling 2-0 victory.
- Newcastle have lost two of their last three on the road (W1)
- Everton have won two of their last three at home (L1)
Head To Head
Everton have won five of their last 10 against Newcastle, with the Magpies winning thee times and two games ending as draws.
Everton Form
Everton were handed a pair of tough assignments across their last two outings as they took on the reigning Premier League champions in Arsenal following their clash with Chelsea.
A pair of 2-0 defeats to the duo was hardly embarrassing, but their inability to breach either defence of their opponents whilst also conceding twice in both was frustrating. They will play far more winnable games, but this pair of defeats has taken some of the shine off their eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Now, attention switches to facing a Newcastle side that recently brought an end to their own two-game losing run. While the Magpies hardly arrive in form, they will at least benefit from the bump in confidence that a win brings. They will also be desperate to extend their winning run across tournaments.
Positive for the Toffees is the fact they have won their last two against their opponents in all competitions. Playing at home, Everton have won two of their last three, and I back them to secure a much-needed win in midweek.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle desperately needed their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, with their victory ensuring they would not end October without a win.
Prior to this victory, the Magpies had suffered a crushing 4-1 loss to Coventry before losing 1-0 to in-form Aston Villa. While defeat to Villa was hardly shocking, it was a home game in which Newcastle’s fans were left frustrated at their inability to breach their opponent.
With a one-game winning run on the line, Newcastle know that they have a big chance to build some momentum. Indeed, Everton have lost their last two, meaning they also arrive needing a win.
While the pair are evenly matched, I predict that the Magpies will see any hopes of notching consecutive wins dashed as they are beaten by their hosts.
Verdict
I am backing Everton to extend their EFL Cup campaign as they eliminate Newcastle.
