Manchester City vs Brighton Preview & Tips

Manchester City needed penalties to eventually beat Brighton in the EFL Cup as the pair played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in normal time.

Brighton failed to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at the weekend as they were eliminated from the EFL Cup by City.

Across their last 10 meetings, City have won four times in 90 minutes, Brighton have won twice and four games have ended as draws.

Manchester City Form

Manchester City saw their seven-game winning run in the league brought to an end last week as they were beaten 2-1 by an Aston Villa side that have been in good form in the league.

Prior to this, they had won seven matches by scoring 19 goals and conceding seven times. Their loss to Aston Villa will be frustrating, but it will take some of the pressure off as they are no longer playing under the weight of a perfect run.

Interestingly, the two sides met in the EFL Cup in midweek. While City did progress, this came via penalties in a game either could have won. That game saw a number of City's main stars rested or not involved, with Erling Haaland one player that was given the night off.

Haaland being rested in midweek means he will almost certainly come back into the starting XI at the weekend, and I predict he will ensure the goals come. Both sides have scored in the last five meetings between the pair, while City have seen the same in their last five across competitions.

Arsenal will be hoping to take advantage of another slip-up from the leaders, but I do not predict that this will happen. City may not be particularly good at keeping clean sheets, but they have generally been too good for most opponent, and I back them to ease past the travelling side.

Brighton Form

It will be incredibly interesting to see whether a three-game winless run across three different competitions will see Brighton's good start stall.

A 0-0 draw with Jablonec in Europe was followed by a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the league. They were then held in a 2-2 draw with City in the EFL Cup that culminated in a defeat on penalties. Considering they had won their previous six, this run will be a worry.

Brighton have been one of the better sides on the road in the league after winning two of their four matches. Defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea away from home shows that Brighton are yet to find the knack for beating the top sides on the road, and I predict they will slump to a defeat at the hands of City in this one.
